Anthropological Society of Manipur (ASM)
The Anthropological Society of Manipur (ASM) is the lone association of anthropologists in the state. Since the early 1980s, the need for such a body for the development of the discipline was strongly felt by Dr. L. Rajendra Singh who can rightly be called the pioneer of anthropology in Manipur. The Society was thus founded on 2nd December 1982 with its office at the Department of Anthropology, D.M. College of Science, Imphal under the pioneership of Dr. Singh and became a full-fledged registered body in 1984. It has been instrumental in introducing the discipline at the university and college levels in the state for post graduate and undergraduate courses respectively. At present the discipline thrives at two universities and over 25 colleges.
The Society is also strongly dedicated to fostering inter-disciplinary co-ordination between Anthropology and other cognate branches of knowledge. It also strives to explore ways and means for application of Anthropology in the larger interest of the community. In an effort to encourage research and research writing, the Society released the first volume of the Journal of Anthropological Society of Manipur in 1994. In 2012 the journal was renamed as “The Frontier Anthropology” which publishes original and significant articles on empirical, analytical and theoretical frontier areas in different branches of anthropology on annual basis. With an aim of imparting knowledge for understanding man in a larger academic context, the Society organises memorial lectures, annual conferences, seminars, and symposia from time to time.
